Igor Makarevich was born in the village of Trialeti in 1943. In 1951 he moved to Moscow. He studied at the Moscow Arts College, and later at All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (arts department). In 1970 he became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1968−1971 he worked as a production designer with the central television. Since 1970, he was engaged in book illustration and designed theater productions. Since 1980, he was engaged in monumental art. In 1984, he was titled the Distinguished Artist of the Russian SFSR. His works are part of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Pompidou Center, the Library of USA Congress, and other museum and private collections around the world. Makarevich is an artist who expresses himself with equal freedom in both drawing and painting. He gained prominence through his graphics works. He became one of the best illustrators of his time, designing illustrations for the works of classic authors and receiving Soviet and international awards for his work.
